Intrigued, I bought candy bars from both city convenience stores and the airport. There's an expert balance of dark chocolate to chili here. SinceKitKat has launched over different flavours in Japan — including bizarre options like soy sauce and sweet potato. The scent is intoxicating, wafting from the candy like a warm wave. The flavour is completely different to any of the Japanese KitKats I've tried. Pear is a subtle taste. The Matcha-Green Tea tastes like grass. Then it all fades, leaving a fleeting memory of taste and a slightly gritty feeling in your mouth.

One of my favorites of the bunch. I don't know what the Japanese use brown sugar syrup for. Locals kept telling me that there are actually two formulations of Green Tea Kit Kats -- the standard flavor that you'll find all over Japan, and a less bitter version that they sell only at Japan's airports, a difference meant to appeal to foreign taste buds.
I love edamame as much as the next mildly hip guy, but this piece of candy doesn't quite capture the taste of an immature pod of soybeans. This sounded all sorts of wrong, but I was prepared to keep an open mind.
